Unidivevers - Red Waters is an opera you wrote with Barði Jóhannsson.Would you have thought one day to write an opera and how did this idea of composing Red Waters are born?

RENNES. RED WATERS, UN OPÉRA DE KEREN ANN ET BARDI JÓHANNSSON

Keren Ann – Barði Jóhannsson et moi avions déjà un univers bien à nous avec notre projet Lady & Bird.In 2009 Arthur Nauzyciel, offered to write a synopsis of an opera. We did it three with Sjón, an Icelandic poet, and then we submitted this story which spoke of this reclined village in which there were rituals.Arthur Nauzyciel really liked the idea and offered to continue. So barði and I sat down to write the opera in 6 scenes. We locked ourselves for a long time to finish it.At the time it was produced at the Rouen Opera.Since then, lots of things have changed for this recreation with the National Orchestra of Brittany so that Red Waters can correspond to the spirit of today.

Unidivevers-The challenge today is to work with a new choir and new singers: did this have a direct impact on the composition and the final rendering of this work?

Keren Ann - No, we haven't changed anything compared to the voices.Things have changed because Arthur Nauzyciel as a director highlights what artists bring. As far as we are concerned, with Barði Jóhansson we have not changed but evolved. We have a larger orchestra and more musicians on stage, so it allowed us to broaden the partition but we have not changed the composition or the writing.

UNIDIVERS-Does the opera enclose the voice in its kind or have you felt free by composing Red Waters?

Keren Ann-From the moment when Barði Jóhannsson and I detached ourselves from this idea that the opera should be written only for vibrato, lyrical, very expressive voices and that we were interested in operas withA little more sober voices, from the moment we allowed ourselves to be free to write an almost Anglo-Saxon song in the operative aspect by mixing a European and Latin side, we felt veryfree. There are things to respect from a story point of view, from a progress point of view, from a character and characters point of view but after in composition and writing we can be very free.

UNIDIVERS-Has the look you wear at the opera change in 10 years?

Keren Ann - Not necessarily, the operas I know I appreciate them for what they are.I have not tried to put myself at a certain level or style of opera which is not in my writing intuition. The idea of an opera is that we enter a room, in a story. We enter a tragedy, we listen, we live with the characters and we live an experience. There is no difference between a classic lyric opera or a repetitive modern contemporary opera or with Gothic songs. It is the experience of the opera that must be put forward and for me that's what matters.

Unidavers - February 11 will release an album that you made with the Debussy Quartet? Is it also a way to make the bridge with classical music and take lyrical song to a different register?

Keren Ann - It is a bridge that has always existed at home.Even when I did more rock or more electronic things I always integrated classic instruments. It has always been important for me to seek organic sound and human in the instrument.I never contented myself with the sounds that replaced him even if I was interested in mixing it with synthetic sounds. With the strings, especially with the Debussy quartet has been created a real round shape, a real set that we looked for in the sound, between the electric guitars, the violin, the viola, the cello, or the piano. It is a proposal for materials that resembles me a lot and in which I find a real area of comfort and proposal.

New album by Keren Ann with the Debussy Quartet, released on February 11, 2022, pre -order available online.
