For the departure of Donald Trump from the White House and the inauguration of Joe Biden as President of the United States, the country's new and first vice-president chose an outfit with high feminist symbolism. Decryption.

This Wednesday, January 20, 2021 will forever change the history of the United States. For the first time in 244 years of existence, the country of Uncle Sam has officially named Kamala Harris vice-president. She thus became the first woman, first black woman and first woman of Asian origin to take up this position. On her own, this democrat born of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother thus revolutionized the system three times.

Purple, feminist emblem of American political women

Arriving at the Capitol to take the oath this Wednesday, January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris was, without doubt, the most watched woman in the world. Fully aware that on this historic day her outfit would be scrutinized and discussed, the politician, who usually designs her looks as a reflection of her commitments, chose to call on a young American designer: Christopher John Rogers. Winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2019, he is loved for his voluminous silhouettes and love of color. Already dubbed by Michelle Obama, he imagined for the vice-president a purple set and a matching coat. For the shoes, she opted for a timeless pair by Manolo Blahnik.

In recent years, many American politicians have favored purple for their choice of outfits. In 2016, during her defeat speech in the presidential election against Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton opted for a black and purple trouser suit. This Wednesday, January 20, she also called on this same color again to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden. A mere coincidence? A trend? Far from there. In fact, it refers directly to the suffragette movement, which claimed the right to vote in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1900s. If we are used to assimilating white people to them, we sometimes forget that these the latter had also chosen green and purple as their favorite colors. The first for hope, the second for dignity. Since then, purple has been synonymous with the fight for equality between men and women. A fight dear to the new vice-president.

Feminism at the heart of Kamala Harris' style

On November 7, as she took the stage at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Deleware, to deliver her maiden speech as vice president-elect, the politician also paid close attention to her look . She had therefore chosen a white trouser suit signed Carolina Herrera and a matching silk pussy-bow blouse. An outfit that echoed those worn by feminist activists of the early 20th century, who used to wear white dresses during demonstrations for women's suffrage. Color of the suffragettes and the National Organization for Women (NOW ), it continues to be worn regularly by American female politicians as a nod to the fight for gender equality. Last February, Democratic members of Congress all donned immaculate attire for Donald Trump's State of the Union address. Before them, Hillary Clinton had also worn a white trouser suit at the Democratic nomination convention in Philadelphia, as part of the 2016 US elections. Both in her dress style and in her speeches, Kamala Harris proved that the feminist cause was at the center of her concerns.
