The typical profile of the high mountain guide, in figures<

Haute-Savoie 41 %

Savoy 17 %

Hautes-Alpes 16 %

Isère 11 %

Pyrenees 6 %

This is the distribution of guides by department of residence. Most guides have settled near mountain ranges, allowing them to practice their profession. As in 2006, the Haute-Savoie department concentrates most of the residences.

32 years old

It is the average age of obtaining the guides diploma in 2018.A high age which is explained by the complexity of the required skills and a profession which is often a retraining.

87 %

This is the share of guides having a status as a self -employed worker/liberal profession, exercising as a guide outside a possible salaried activity.12 % are micro-entrepreneurs.

20 %

It is the share of guides declaring to live for several months a year in another accommodation and often another department than theirs. The main "reception" departments are Haute-Savoie and Savoie.

1/2

One in two guide who answered the questionnaire is a member of a guides office, 13 % are associated with a private structure. While various "small" offices feel a lesser interest in young guides, this trend is not found on the whole category with a proportion of guides attached to a constant office, whatever the seniority of the diploma. Thus, although there are several modes of exercise of the profession (member of an office or a company, gendarme, CRS, military, professor of national education, employee of various structures or independent guide), the guides remainMostly associated with a structure.

Le profil type du guide de haute montagne, en chiffres

15 % are regular reinforcements of office or private structures, 8 % are employees.Almost 27 % can be considered completely "excluding structures".A proportion which happens to be lower in aspiring guides but which quickly increases over the career, thus reflecting the constitution of a clientele over the first 10 years.

34 %

This is the share of the guides interviewed which declares to live 90 % of the guide profession.A figure similar to that obtained in 2016.

61 % of guides have another significant professional activity (more than 10 % of income) in the sports field (ski instructor, canyon, high work, rescuer, tracker, etc.), 41 % of guides in a non -sporting field (excludingretirement).

The rate of mono-active guides decreases regularly with age, by more than 50 % in those under 30 to under 20 % among those over 60 years old. This trend is similar to guides whose activity represents more than 70 % of income.

30 k €

Among the mono-active guides or almost, 40 % generate turnover (CA) less than 30 k €.A relatively low turnover given the costs and charges and compared to other self -employed workers.

57 %

Among the respondents, 57 % declare that they had climbed Mont Blanc as a professional in 2010.Conjugated at the concentration observed on the Alpine massif, one can think that Mont Blanc represents the maximum concentration point of the professional activity of guides.
