"At the very beginning, I thought I was just going to lend a hand.I already knew the company [of Shonda Rhimes] Shondaland for several years, and their production manager, Sara Fischer, phoned me.I went to chat with [the creator] Chris [van Dusen] and [the executive producer] Betsy [Beers] to see if it would be possible to create something on this scale.I also knew the aesthetics of Shondaland and I quickly understood that this project would not be like an adaptation of Jane Austen.The question was how we were going to be able to adapt the aesthetics of a series in period costumes and make it scandalous and modern?They then asked me if I was ready, and I accepted without hesitation because the challenge was too beautiful.I had never set up a costume department before.

"It took five months of preparation before filming, and a costume team made up of 238 people.Among them, there were patron saints, the extraordinary Mr Pearl who designed all our corsets, a tailor service, a embellishment service, embroiderers, and my co-captain John Glaser, among others.It was like a village of small elves who worked tirelessly, and who did a wonderful work.In the end, we created nearly 7,500 pieces - hats, shawls, overcoat - which made up the 5,000 costumes [estimated] which passed the camera.Just for Phoebe [Dynevor, who plays Daphne Bridgerton], there were 104 costumes.This is an impressive number, even for a first role.»»
